SINGAPORE: The LionsXII’s involvement in Malaysian football has come to an end, after Fandi Ahmad’s side crashed out of the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup.
The LionsXII beat Pahang 2-0 at the Jalan Besar Stadium, but lost 4-3 on aggregate.
Goals from Christopher van Huizen and Faris Ramli within the first 20 minutes of the game gave the hosts a glimmer of hope, as another goal and a clean sheet would have sent the LionsXII through to the semi-finals on the away-goal ruling.
But Pahang managed to hang on, as they remain on course to win their third consecutive Malaysia Cup crown.
The LionsXII’s exit comes on the heels of the Football Association of Malaysia’s decision not to extend the Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore, which means that the LionsXII will not play in the Malaysia Super League next season.
