Took the day off for a late fall hike in the Noisy Diobsud wilderness area of Washington state. A beautiful day, began crisp and cold before dawn, driving up from Whidbey through Anacortes, Sedro-Wooley and on up over the Baker Lake dam to where the trailhead was lightly frosted and remnants of the last days snow still lingered. Setting off through old growth forests, open meadows bursting with wild blueberries, don’t step in the bear poop, and on to Anderson lake for a look see before making our way over to Watson Lakes and spectacular views of the Picketts Range. This hike is short, moderately hilly and now on my top ten day hikes.

Well a clinic like this is long overdue, as anyone who’s ever spent time on the internet can tell you, there’s a lot of sick people out there.

The facility, called ReStart specializes in treating bad cases of, (hold on gotta new tweet), internet obsession. (tweet was about my bff’s facebook pic, brb) So the program is a residence type treatment center where the afflicted, not me lol, go to break the vapid cycle of flat-screen fixation. (1sec, fresh IM from, lordrandall63) Patients go cold turkey, no cell phones, lattes, eeepc’s or WoW allowed. Upon succesful completion of the program each patient recieves a small flat rock that says “See Other Side” on both sides.

From Washington University in St. Louis come this story on how cancer may have a new nemesis in the form of bee venom.

Researchers there have reported some very positive results in the treatment of two types of cancer with the use of nanospheres delivering the effective ingredient in bee venom, melittin, directly to the cancerous regions. Mellitin, the toxin, had long been a sustance of interest to researchers due to it’s destructive properities to cellular structures. Targeted delivery via the nanospheres, which are readily passed through the bloodstream, along with an additive that makes the spheres particularly attracted to affected tissue has resulted in either the slowing of the growth of tumors or a signifigant decrease in their size.

And I thought the only good bee was a dead bee.

Alright kiddos, time to start thinking about your wish list for Santa Claus this year. How about a howitser?

The Charleston Daily Mail is reporting that a local father has made a real working cannon for his eleven year old son as a birthday gift. The cannon, which weighs 700lbs and looks like a piece of civil war field artillary, is the real deal. Fill it up with powder, light the fuse and you don’t get a little firecracker pop, you get a window shattering kabooom that could rouse civil war veterans buried in cemeteries three counties away.

Mike Daugherty, who is a machinist by trade, said his son is very mature and would be able to handle the responsibility of owning a piece of artillery.

“He’s a good kid. One thing about my son he has a great respect for guns and weapons, so he will not be firing this anytime soon without an adult present.”

Gosh dad, can I have a rail gun next birthday?
