Baogang, Fouling The Nest For Progress


In Mongolia, far from where you may live, they are digging a hole in the earth and filling it with a foul, sulfurous, hellish residue left over after they extract the precious metals and rare earths used to make our smartphones and electronic gadgets. Think Mordor but with fewer flames and more stink. The Unknown Fields Division went there recently, along with reporters from the BBC, to take a look at the place and see if it was truly one of the places on earth that is being sacrificed to our gods of technological advance. That’s their mission after all, to visit and sniff out those hells on earth we are creating and determine just how long it will be before our pleasant little nests are rendered unliveable.
