The poem commemorates the historic battle that took place on the 25th of October 1854 when a light cavalry unit led by Lord Cardigan, of the famed stylish sweater, assaulted numerically superior, well placed Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava, (note: not a tasty pastry, nor a stocking hat with eyeholes!), in the Crimean War. The Russians held the high ground with a force of several thousand as well as many pieces of heavy artillery and the small contingent of Brits were badly beaten as their attack was repelled, suffering heavy losses.
