“The Coroner” Unveiled: A Dark Fantasy Adventure by Nate Fitch

The Coroner marks Nate Fitch’s entry into fantasy fiction, transitioning from his established horror roots to gain notable recognition as a potential force in future fantasy storytelling. As the inaugural installment in the Plague Hunters Requiem series, the Coroner masterfully blends eerie horror elements with the expansive storytelling of epic fantasy. The narrative is crafted to captivate dark fantasy and horror fans, particularly those drawn to the intricate worlds of FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series or Games Workshop’s Warhammer universe.

At the heart of the narrative is Resurrectionist Paulo Reveré, an enigmatic protagonist and member of the Royal Order of Coroners. This organization serves as a shield and a scalpel in a world ravaged by unholy abominations. Tasked with investigating the supernatural and reclaiming territories consumed by darkness, Reveré’s journey unfolds in the cursed village of Lazzar Perish, a forsaken settlement teetering on the edge of annihilation.

The story introduces readers to various original monsters, including the Varemoden, a terrifying amalgamation of Lovecraftian horrors and mythic European werewolves. These grotesque creatures are just one example of the chilling adversaries populating the richly imagined world of The Coroner. Fitch’s penchant for atmospheric detail and layered lore ensures readers are immersed in a universe where every shadow hides a story and every corner whispers of forgotten gods and eldritch curses.

After reading the book myself, I found that the world-building element of this weird world was nothing short of impressive. The novel’s extensive world-building, intricate histories, unique cultures, and a palpable sense of dread permeate every chapter. Fitch masterfully combines influences from H.P. LovecraftJ.R.R. Tolkien, and Mary Shelley, crafting a narrative that balances existential horror with epic fantasy.
